How do I apply to become a Notary Public?

Applications for Notary Public Commission can be obtained from the Secretary of State in Annapolis, Maryland or you may download the application at the Secretary of State’s web site (www.sos.state.md.us). Phone: 410-974-5520

Once the application has been submitted and approved, you will be notified to appear before the Clerk of the Circuit Court at the Courthouse at 200 Charles Street P.O. Box 970, La Plata, MD 20646 to take the oath of office and receive your Notary Commission. There is an $11.00 fee payable to the Clerk of the Circuit Court at the time you take the oath of office. How do I get an Authentication of a Notary Public?

Authentication may be obtained in person or by mail at the Charles County Circuit Court at 200 Charles Street P.O. Box 970, La Plata, MD 20646. The Clerk of the Circuit Court for Charles County authenticates a Notary Public from Charles County only. The fee is $1.00 per authentication. Checks should be payable to the Clerk of the Circuit Court.
