Kent County's Land Records date back to 1636, with the General Indexing starting with 1656. The first 8 Libers are comprised of transcriptions from the original records that can be found in the Hall of Records in Annapolis. The copying was done by Sarah Elizabeth Stuart, beginning July 3, 1928 and ending February 13, 1929. The typing was done by Bernice Chrisfield Scotten, Kathryn M. Nickerson, and Sue Smith Winkler, and checked by Sarah Elisabeth Stuart between January 15, 1934 and February 15, 1934.
The work was started under Robert A. Shallcross, Clerk of the Circuit Court for Kent County. It was discontinued for lack of funds and later taken up under Marion deK. Smith, Jr., Supervisor of the Civil Works Administration, Kent County, Maryland, Project #15, approved January 11, 1934.
