(Baltimore, MD—April 26, 2002) The Maryland Judiciary’s Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office (MACRO) and Howard Community College are co-hosting a public forum to serve as a catalyst after September 11 in showing Marylanders how to strengthen communities by taking action against hate and discrimination.
The event, “We Are One Community—Fighting Ethnic, Religious, Racial, and other Types of Prejudice Since 9/11,” will focus on the importance of standing up for neighbors and supporting those who have been unfairly targeted. The public forum will take place on Sunday, May 5 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at The Galleria, Howard Community College, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, Md.
“Coming together like this provides unique opportunities for community building,” said Hon. Robert M. Bell, Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals, who will provide the opening remarks for the event. “Given the proliferation of conflict at the international level, I believe we in Maryland need to see ourselves as one community, emphasizing peaceful conflict resolution at the neighborhood level and making sure that trouble abroad doesn’t create trouble at home.”
The keynote address will be given by Hon. Elijah Cummings, U.S. Representative, speaking on diversity and community. The address will be followed by panel discussions, moderated by Sade Baderinwa, morning news anchor for WBAL-TV. Panelists will include Gary Monroe of the Maryland Human Relations Commission, Leila Laoudji of the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, Carl Snowden of the Anne Arundel County Intergovernmental Affairs Office, Anthony McCarthy of Free State Justice, Bishop Felton Edwin May of the United Methodist Church, Lobna Ismail of Connecting Cultures, and Mary M. Campbell of the Howard County Human Rights Commission.
Regional workshops also will
be held to plan future dialogues and forums around the state. The closing
reception will feature ethnic food and music.
