Howard County District Court Celebrates
Drug/DUI Treatment Court Graduation

(ELLICOTT CITY, Md. – Nov. 10, 2010) For 14 people scheduled to appear in an Ellicott City courthouse on Wednesday, Nov. 17, it may seem like Thanksgiving has arrived a week early. They will be joined by families and friends to celebrate their graduation from the Howard County District Court drug and DUI (alcohol) treatment court. The media is invited to attend.

The rigorous drug and DUI treatment court program combines judicial oversight with intensive treatment and supervision, explains Howard County District Judge Neil Edward Axel, who will preside over the graduation ceremony. The guest speaker will be Howard County Fire and Rescue Retired Battalion Chief Sean Kelly.

Maryland’s first drug treatment court began in Baltimore in 1984, and the program has expanded to include more than 40 drug treatment courts throughout the state. Howard County’s drug treatment court began in June 2004, and the program for DUI infractions was added in January 2005.
