Court of Appeals hosts event for youths from juvenile facilities

Each November, Maryland’s highest court hosts a unique event for youths from the state’s juvenile facilities: the Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) and Maryland State Department of Education Oratorical Contest. The courtroom is packed with families, supporters, and officials, and a Court of Appeals judge presides as students deliver inspirational speeches they have created. As one judge described it, “this is a wonderful chance for young people who have gotten to know the court system in unfortunate and unenviable ways to interact with the courts and have their voices heard at the highest level.” Watch highlights of last year’s event here.
