Audubon Collection: Red-Headed Woodpecker

Red-Headed Woodpecker

Plate 267
Havell XXVII

Red-Headed Woodpecker

(Melanerpes erythrocephalus)

This painting is particularly difficult to date, since it is not inscribed and Audubon did not mention it in his writings. The skillful composition indicates that it is not an early work; since the drawing was among those Audubon took to England in 1826, it was probably done in 1824 or 1825
