RECENT UPDATES FROM THE MARYLAND STATE BOARD OF LAW EXAMINERS

UPDATE FOR MAY 6, 2024 - Applicants for the July 2024 UBE in Maryland should take careful note that the filing deadline, May 20, 2024 at 4:30 p.m., is a MONDAY. The filing deadline is a RECEIVED-BY deadline, not a postmark or ship-by date. Applicants planning to use UPS, FedEx, or other commercial delivery service are strongly cautioned to ship their packages no later than Friday, May 17, 2024. Packages left at UPS Store and FedEx Office locations (such as at Walmart or CVS), and free standing UPS and FedEx drop boxes are rarely, if ever, picked up on the weekend. As such, packages submitted to UPS and FedEx on Saturday, May 18, 2024 or Sunday, May 19, 2024 are unlikely to actually ship until Monday, May 20, which is the filing deadline. Such packages will not be delivered on May 20, 2024 and will arrive after the filing deadline. Further, the US Postal Service does not guarantee any delivery dates. Applicants planning to use the US Postal Service are strongly cautioned to mail their materials at least a week before the filing deadline and to use Priority Express service. Do not use first-class mail. Do not rely on any postal employee’s statement regarding a likely delivery date.

Applicants expecting to complete their application materials on the weekend before the filing deadline should plan for hand delivery to SBLE’s offices, located at Judiciary APOD, 580 Taylor Avenue, Annapolis, MD, 21401, which will be open from 8:30am to 4:30pm on Monday, May 20, 2024.

Applicants whose application materials arrive after the May 20, 2024 deadline will be required to show good cause for SBLE to accept the late filing, pursuant to Md. Rules 19-206 and 19-210 and Board Rule 2.
