Judge Althea M. Handy Heads Civil Docket for Baltimore City Circuit Court

(BALTIMORE – Dec. 27, 2013) Judge W. Michel Pierson, administrative judge for the Circuit Court for Baltimore City, has announced the appointment of Judge Althea M. Handy to head the court’s civil docket. The appointment was effective Dec. 1.

“Judge Handy brings excellent leadership and management skills to this new assignment,” said Judge Pierson, who has been judge-in-charge of the civil docket since 2009. “I have the rare opportunity of appointing my successor, and I have every confidence in handing over these duties to Judge Handy.”

As judge-in-charge, Judge Handy will be responsible for the assignment of judges and the management of the civil docket.

“I am honored to have been chosen for this position and look forward to the challenge. I hope to follow Judge Pierson’s fine example,” Judge Handy said.

Judge Handy has served on the Baltimore City Circuit Court bench since December 2002. Before her judicial appointment, she was Baltimore City Assistant State’s Attorney from 1987-2002, where she was a senior prosecutor in the homicide division and division chief of the sex offense unit from 1999-2002. She earned her J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1986.
