During the ongoing COVID crisis, we encourage all customers to contact the Clerk’s office at 301-777-5923 with any questions. Staff will attempt to address any questions by phone to reduce exposure as much as possible. Should you come to the office, we ask that only the person directly involved with the transaction appear. For your safety and that of our staff, please do not bring children, family members or friends to the Clerk’s office.

A mask must be worn at all times. The mask must cover your mouth and nose completely, there will be no exceptions. In addition, social distancing of six feet must always be maintained from other customers and staff. You may be required to wait outside during busy times so that safe COVID distancing is maintained.

Appointments will be taken from 9 am until 4 pm each day and are highly encouraged for civil ceremonies. Please call 301-777-5923 to schedule your ceremony. During the COVID crisis, only the parties to be married will be allowed to attend. The area used for ceremonies is extremely small and limited until social distancing guidelines are lifted.

Welcome to the Allegany County Courthouse and the Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court. The Clerk of the Court is a locally elected State official with the responsibilities established and regulated by the laws of Maryland and the Rules of the Court of Appeals of Maryland. Since 1658, the office of Clerk of Court has provided the citizens of Maryland with a variety of essential services. The revenue collected by the clerks for these services is distributed to city, county, and state governments.

Each year the Clerk’s office files, processes and maintains civil, criminal and juvenile actions. The Clerk's office records land deeds, mortgages, plats, conveyances and other precious documents. The Clerk administers oaths to County officials, Judges and Governor appointees, issues business and marriage licenses and performs civil marriage ceremonies. The Clerk also commissions Notaries Public. As you can see, the Office of Clerk of the Circuit Court is a busy place.
