Maryland’s Chief Judge Congratulates Young Peacemakers

Reception Honors Students for Artwork that Promotes Peaceful Resolution to Conflicts

(ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND — December 9, 2016) Students from around Maryland will be honored for their peacemaking efforts by Maryland’s Chief Judge on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 in Annapolis.  The Honorable Mary Ellen Barbera, Chief Judge of the Maryland Court of Appeals, will host the reception for winners of the Judiciary’s Conflict Resolution Day Student Bookmark Art Contest.  The popular competition calls on students to use their artistic talents to promote the peaceful resolution to conflicts.  News media are invited to attend the reception, which will begin at 4 p.m.

During the reception, Chief Judge Barbera will present awards to the young artists and meet with the students, their families and friends.  More than 1,000 bookmarks will be on display at the reception and later at the Judicial College Education and Conference Center in December.  Several of the submissions will appear in Judiciary publications.

The contest, which is celebrating its 11th year, received more than 2,100 entries from Maryland children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Students created bookmarks to illustrate their ideas for resolving and preventing conflict, including:

  • peer mediation
  • talking things out
  • apologizing
  • respecting differences
  • solving problems together
  • listening
  • tolerance
  • building peace and other alternatives to violence

Prizes are awarded for first, second, and third place in three age groups: kindergarten through second grade; third through fifth grade; and sixth-eighth grade.  Prizes for each age group are: $75 for first place; $50 for second place; and $25 for third place.
